Zoologická zahrada, povodně a klimatické plánování města

Zoological garden, high floods and climatic planning of a city by Václav Cílek.

The Zoological garden in Prague was devastated by high floods in 2002 and partly damaged by floods in 2013 when 18 hectars were covered by 2,6 m of water and Zoo from the point of Prague functioned as an expensive dry polder. The basic neuralgic point of the whole Prague is located in Podbaba narrows between Zoo Ridge and Baba Hillock. We may expect in the next 50 years up to 3 larger floods including one that may be larger than so far extreme 2002 flood. Small buildings of the Zoo will be transformed into building that may be flooded, existing large buildings will be proposed to the level of 2002 flood + 50 cm and new buildings will be built at higher elevation. However from the point of Prague flood protection the river has to deepened in Podbaba narrows but higher speed of water discharge from Prague Basin should be compensated by dry polders in Mělník area and elsewhere.
