The Times They Are A-Changin’ by Petr Pokorný.

Tree species characteristic of modern temperate forests are recorded at least intermittently from the period of the last glacial maximum (LGM), through the LGM and Late glacial, to the Holocene, and some records locate trees close to the limits of the Scandinavian ice sheet, supporting the hypothesis that some temperate taxa persisted in northern refugia during the last glacial cycle. Together with phylogeographic records, these findings seem to reject the traditional hypothesis about southern glacial refugia and subsequent colonization following the process of warming and deglaciation. With regard to these facts we face a substantial paradigmatic shift in the field of palaeoecology, and there are already several reasons to believe that the territory of Eastern Central Europe (namely the Czech and Slovak Republics) will become a focal point in the further development in this research field.
