Podivuhodná historie igelitu

Strange case of “igelit” by Miroslav Raab.

The term “igelit” was originally a trade mark of plasticized polyvinyl chloride produced by German company IG Farben. The meaning of this word however completely changed in the post-war Czechoslovakia. The word “igelit” now means a completely different material in the common Czech and Slovak languages, namely low-density polyethylene and in fact any polymeric material in general. Interestingly enough, the word “igelit” inspired several Czech lyric writers to their poems or songs. It is interesting to follow how the meaning of “igelit” has changed during the recent history of the Czech Republic.
