Jak útočí africká včela

How African bee attacks? by Václav Cílek.

Four geologists and archaeologists were attacked by wild African bees in the area of 6th Nile Caract some 80 km north of Khartoum. The attack lasted some 35 minutes, it took place on the distance of more than 1 km and the bees followed us almost 200 m down to Nile waters in difficult stony terrain. We had the chance to observe the attack for 2 hours and in two cases we had the feeling we are fighting for our lives. The number of received stings was in one case higher than 400, in the other case 70–100. Bees are living in sandstone caves and rock shelters in prehistoric caves at the base of silicified Nubian sandstone of Mt. Rawiyan at the southern edge of Sbaloka gorge. The attack was surprisingly well coordinated and intelligent. The eyes were the primary target. The safe distance is more than 5 and probably more than 10 m. The constant repetition of the attacks causes after some time panic. One of the villagers was killed there because he panicked and fell from the rock. The only defense is that within 10–20 seconds before the bees will attack to cover ourself with mosquito net. The use of repellent spray was successful for first two minutes and then the attack was even more severe. Local people believe that bee migration took place in this area only 10 years ago.
